The Bullying Problem
Did you know that 1 in 4 teachers see no problem with bullying and will only intervene 4% of the time? Faculty and administration are aware of the bullying that plagues the school system, but they haven’t figured out a way to manage the high volume and issue punishment properly. That is why sometimes the person being bullied is given the same punishment as the bully. For some strange reason, the educators don’t know how to differentiate between the perpetrator and the victim. Sometimes, the mistake on the educator’s part perpetuates the cycle of bullying in our schools. The consequences of those mistakes can result in depression, suicide, and even murder. Every 30 minutes a teenager attempts suicide due to bullying.
The fact that kids who are being bullied are also being punished for fighting back after being spat on, shoved into lockers, punched & kicked, verbally abused (some of the most hanis words and phrases are used during bullying), etc. is proof of the partial failure of our school systems. The bullies are usually bigger, stronger, and more popular. If educators can’t recognize that, then they are naive and should be the ones going back to school: continued education on bully prevention and consequences. It is the school systems responsibility to keep our children safe and failure to do so, should result in consequences for the faculty.
For instance, this link is a perfect example of a teacher (John Rosi) not seeing any problem with bullying and actually leading several students in what he called “harmless childhood horse play” that was actually a blatant bulling incident caught on tape, which left the victim traumatized.
